Michelle Sisson dreams of one day working at the Centre for Disease Control and if her passion and maturity towards her studies are any indication, this dream will indeed become reality.
Students of the Trent University and Fleming College's joint University Transfer (UT) program spend there first year at Fleming College where they are taught all the skills needed to be a confident, successful university student.
High Praise for UT Program & University Services
Just finishing her final year of the UT program jointly offered between Fleming College and Trent University, Ms. Sisson can not say enough about the quality of the UT program and how it "gives you the background and critical thinking knowledge to prepare you for university."
Ms. Sisson found many of the support services offered at Trent, including counselling, financial and health services, to be extremely helpful and says they are a big part of what helped get her through. Another form of support was found in her favourite professor -- Dr. Kevin Peters. Ms. Sisson states, "I found his approachability and willingness to give his time and advice not just academically but life advice as well, simply invaluable to my success as a student."
Extracurricular Activities: Key to Success
Upon beginning studies as a Trent student, Ms. Sisson decided that she "wanted the full experience" and delved into many extracurricular activities. She credits her year on the varsity swim team to giving her the best academic year and says, "Sports gives you the release you need from the pressures of university."
Next up for Ms. Sisson is a well-earned trip abroad to teach English as a Second Language after which she hopes to pursue her Masters in Biology and Statistics. Ms. Sisson highly recommends the UT program because of the solid foundation it provided to succeed in university.
She says, "Don't quit! Just when you want to give up, push a little harder and use your friends and the many supports that Trent offers." Ms. Sisson has such a sense of pride from being a Trent student and "couldn't imagine going anywhere else."
